History and important Struggles of SST

05-03-1970 Awami Tahreek (Sindhi Peoples Movement) was formally formed in a meeting of leading writers, activists and intellectuals in Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan. At the same meeting, leading theoretician Rasool Bux Palijo was elected as its first General Secretary. In coming years Rasool Bux Palijo and other founder members played key role in formation of Sindhi Hari Committee, Sindhi Shagird Tahreek, Awami National Party, Sindh Qomi Itehad, PONM, Sindhi Adabi Sangat, MRD, Sindhiani Tahreek, Sindhi Hari Tahreek, Pakistan Awami Jamhoori Itehad, Pakistan Awami Tahreek, Bihari Rokio Committee, Zulm Band Karyo Committee, Adumshumari Committee, Sindhi Mazdoor Tahreek, Sindh Intellectual Forum, Sindhi Awam Jo Qomi Itehad, Sindhi Girls Students Organization, Sujaag Bar Tahreek, Sindhi Shahri Itehad, Sindh Water Committee, 1940 Pakistan Resolution Implementation Committee, Legal & Technical Committee for Protection of Lands and Resources of Sindh, Awami Jamhoori Tahreek and Anti Greater Thal Canal and Kala Bagh Dam Action Committee.





20-04-1977 Foundation of Sindhi Shagird Tahreek (SST) Sindhi Student’s National, democratic, revolutionary and scientific organization (Sindhi Students Movement).


27-04-1978 Active part by Awami Tahreek, Sindhi Hari Tahreek and Sindhi Shagird Tahreek (SST) in the struggle of journalists against the dictatorship. Awami Tahreek activists offer volunteer court arrests. Hundreds imprisoned. GN Mughal, Minhaj Birna, Mujahid Berelvi and others welcome Awami Tahreek’s historical role.


1978 Sindhi Shagrid Tahreek joins country wide Shagrid Itehad namely “Pakistan Progressive Student Alliance (PPSA)” for democratic struggle.


1985 Struggle of SST under the slogan of ‘stop the Ghunda Gardi (violence) in educational institutions of Sindh against the so-called nationalist ghundas (gangsters). During the Zia’s period 1977-86 so-called nationalist ghundas under the patronage of Deputy Martial-Law Administrator kidnapped, tortured and rapped hundreds of students related to SST, DSF and SPSF and dozens of teachers and writers.


1986 Awami Tahreek organized hundreds of welcome rallies and receptions attended by thousands of people in different parts of Sindh after the release of Mr. Rasool Bux Palijo and Fazil Rahoo.


1986 Rasool Bux Palijo became the first political prisoner of Pakistan who remained longest term in jail under political charges. Mr. Palijo was declared as Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International in 1981.



17-01-1987 protest against the murder of great peasant Leaders Shaheed Awam Fazil Rahoo. Nimaz-e-Janaza , demonstrations and rallies all over the Pakistan.
10-04-1987 organizing 10th annual central convention by SST at
Jungshahi Thatta presided by Rasool Bux Palijo.
17-07-1987 Foundation of Sindhi Awam Jo Qomi Itehad (SPNA) on the initiative of AT. Struggle started against Kala Bagh Dam and settlement of Biharis.

04-03-88 First ever Anti Kala Bag Dam convention at Hur Camp Hyderabad by Awami Tahreek and SPNA. Palijo appeals Sindhi Awami to raise their voice against Kalabagh Dam. Meer Thebo, Mohammad Khan Solangi, Mola Bux, Manzoor Solangi, Aijaz Mangi, Suleman Dahri, Mohamad Ibrahim Joyo, Sayed Alam Shah, Ayaz Latif Palijo, Arab Keerano and others condemn General Zia’s policies. Convention demanded cancellation of Kala Bagh Dam Project.


23-03-1988 Protest march in Sukkur by AT and SPNA


06-12-91 First Long march led by Rasool Bux Palijo started from Sukkur against the postponement of census, Dams and repatriation of Biharis by Awami Tahreek.


08-09-93 Jashan-e-Salgrah and speech competition held under the title of “Future Of Education in Sindh’ by SBT and SST.


25-11-93 SST Central convention and speech competition on “Latif Ja Soorma Azeem Ahen ya Soormiyon” held in Sindh University..


04-03-94 Debates on “Students Politics is necessary or not “in LMC by SST.


1995 17th central convention of Sindhi Students Movement (SST).


24-02-97 Jashan-e-Ustad Bukhari in LMC by Sindhi Shagird Tahreek.


31-05-97 Jashan-e-Latif in Shahdadpur by Sindhi Shagird Tahreek.


12-07-1997 Successful strikes in Qasimabad held by Qasimabad Welfare movement and Sindhi Shagird Tahreek (SST) against the murder of Abu Zahid Narejo by Jamiat Terrorists in Karachi.

1986 to 1997 in the period of 12 years the Awami Tahreek, Sindhiani Tahreek, Sindhi Shagird Tahreek by making its presentation in a number of seminars and conferences and gatherings held in America, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Afghanistan, Philippines, India, Hong Kong, Canada, Bangladesh, Nepal, Holland, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Belgium and United Arab Emirates highlighted the case of Sindhi people and of Pakistani working classes and peasantry


1998 February Thatta, debate on falling standard of education in Sindh by AT & SST.


19-02-1998 AT Chief Rasool Bux Palijo criticized the so-called nationalist parties and their student wings and Vice Chancellors of Universities for destroying the education of Sindh in education seminar of Ibrat Group. A committee comprising of Professor Aijaz Qureshi, Ayaz Latif Palijo and Amir Ali Qadri draft the education resolution and policies

13-05-1998 21st Central Conference of Sindhi Shagird Tahreek, chief guest Rasool Bux Palijo appeals the youth for seriousness in education.


10-02-2004, Bicycle March by Sindhi Shagird Tahreek against Greater Thal Canal and Kala Bagh Dam.


20-10-2004: The Sindhi Shagird Tahreek (SST) at its central committee meeting here on Tuesday called upon the government to allocate more funds for education.


13-01-05– Khairpur– Jashan-e-Latif, Shah Latif Day celebrated– Rasool Bux Palijo, lutafullah Phalpoto, Malik Nadeem, Ali Nawaz Memon, Irshad Dharijo, Azhar Buleedi also spoke and condemned Thal Canal, man-made water shortage & Kala Bagh.
